According to recent media reports, insiders have revealed that Tesla is planning to develop a more affordable version of the Model Y specifically for the Chinese market. Compared to the current Model Y, the new vehicle will see minimal changes to its battery, powertrain, and chassis. The core functionalities of the new car will remain consistent with the existing Model Y, with the goal of achieving a faster product launch by simplifying configurations. This initiative will be led by Tesla's Chinese team. However, this information has not been officially confirmed by Tesla China.
The new vehicle will adopt a naming convention using letters and numbers, moving away from the current English naming system. Previously, Tesla launched a lower-priced version of the Model 3 in the Mexican market, which featured several downgrades such as a single-color ambient light instead of multi-color, semi-leather and semi-fabric seats, the removal of the rear entertainment screen, and the elimination of seat and steering wheel heating. These reductions lowered the price by approximately 28,600 RMB. However, this strategy does not seem to be intended for the Chinese market.
It is reported that the launch timing of the new model will depend on the market performance of the new Model Y. If the sales of the new Model Y fall short of expectations, this more affordable version is expected to be released in the second half of this year.
